Clinton On Why Obama Should Be President

From last night's speech:

We need to elect Barack Obama, because we need a president who understands that America can't compete in the global economy by padding the pockets of energy speculators while ignoring the workers whose jobs have been shipped overseas.

We need a president who understands we can't solve the problems of global warming by giving windfall profits to the oil companies while ignoring opportunities to invest in the new technologies that will build a green economy.

Why Isn't Sen. Barack Obama in Denver?

[Updated to show entire video]. I saw this CNN interview after Hillary's speech.

It's clear that Sen. Barack Obama has a big sales job to do on many, many Hillary supporters.

Why is he in Montana, watching the convention at a house party? Shouldn't he have come to Denver for the entire convention? It's more than half over and he's still not here. He's missed a great opportunity.

Update: Commenters point out it's tradition for the nominee not to appear at the convention until the final day. I didn't know that. Now that I do, I think this would have been a good year to break that tradition. He's got a lot of work to do and his physical presence at various events this week, and the media portrayal of it, might have helped.

The Effect of Hillary's Speech

The media is using superlatives to describe Hillary Clinton's speech tonight.

The Republicans are saying she didn't do anything to dispel the idea that Obama lacks the experience to lead the country.

I think it's a great night for Democrats, but what will the final effect be?

Did Obama made the biggest mistake of his campaign by not choosing Hillary for his VP candidate? How many Democrats will sit the election out?

And yes, watching Joe Biden made me cringe.

Hillary's Speech

The most electric moment of the convention so far: Hillary Clinton.

Michelle Obama, who has been shown all night long laughing and animated, is clapping but with the tightest mouth I've seen on her, as if she's totally nervous. She's constantly pursing her lips. Relax, Michelle, Hillary's on your side now.

(We keep crashing, back up site here.)

Update: She hit it out of the park. Great speech. She also outlined all the Democratic values. Not a hint of bitterness. She projects the voice of experience and leadership with supreme confidence and credibility. The consummate Democrat.

What Is The Message?

Earlier today I attended the media round table and report on Katrina Recovery: Failed Promises...Future Prospects moderated by Ted Koppel with Mary L. Landrieu, Doug Brinkley and others. The talk was based on the major challenge facing the new administration which will need to convert this national tragedy into a triumph for the nation. "This fragmented recovery is a mirror on America," was one of the themes, which I will post in depth here and at Huffpo after I turn in a manuscript that was due yesterday.

Quoting Arianna yesterday produced so much venom in the comments that I probably won't do it again here! But, Fearless is a good book nonetheless.

How about a quote from Fear And Loathing on The Campaign Trail '72? [more...}

The Hillary Clinton Hour

I'll be live blogging the Hillary Clinton segment and speech below the fold. She is scheduled to come on in about a half an hour. There is a video and Chelsea Clinton will introduce her mother.

Convention Open Thread 2

Bob Casey is on now, then Mark Warner, then the "Hillary Clinton Segment," with Hillary speaking at around 10:30. Her speech is said to be about 20 minutes.

Casey spending some time praising Hillary Clinton. Casey is trying to deliver some red meat. The lines are lame but, hell, they are better than nothing. The line is "Four more months." Um, ok. I prefer my formulation "Say No To Bush's Third Term. Say No To McCain."

I'll write about Warner on the flip.

This is an Open CONVENTION Thread.

Not Covering The Convention

Corrente catches this bit from Chuck Todd:

Beginning Tuesday night and extending at least midway through Wednesday, you’ll have to forgive those of us in the media if you hear us humming the song “You’re So Vain.” The Clintons will probably think this convention’s about them.

Interestingly, there is nothing stopping NBC and CNN and so on from actually covering the speeches being delivered by people OTHER THAN Bill and Hillary Clinton. It is not Bill and Hillary Clinton's fault that Chuck Todd, Chris Matthews and the entire NBC network can't help themselves. Excuse me Chuck, that is an incredibly stupid thing to say. I hope you are not too vain, cause even though this post is about you, it is to point out a stupid thing you wrote.

Convention Open Thread

There seems to be an unstated desire for a Convention Open Thread. Please keep your comments germane to the post you are commenting in.

Kathleen Sebelius is speaking now. Very . . . erm . . . calm. Obama dodged a bullet there. Can't even deliver a line worth a damn.

Bloggers vs. Big Media at the DNC

Jane at Firedoglake has an excellent post, HuffPo Lunch: Dirty Bloggers Eatin’ Cold Salmon. Big donors and corporate sponsors continue to make the Democrats' world go round. There are many different levels of media access at the convention. Thankfully, we're still dirty hippies in that world.
